Selmo’s Prosecco NV \ Casa

Selmo (short for Anselmo) is Paolo’s father’s name. Without Selmo, there would be no Vigna Bottin. With hints of ripe apple, acacia flowers and pear. This is an elegant and fine wine, with moderate acidity creating a magical mouthfeel of bubbles.

Vermentino 2022 \ Casa

***Out of Sock***

This wine has vibrant aromas of sweet soft lemon rind, pink grapefruit and pear. A great balance of fruit and acidity. The palate is crisp and fresh with a zingy citric sea spray, which is what this variety is all about.

James Halliday \ Wine Companion 93 points: Made virtually identically to the fiano, albeit, imparting a different textural kaleidoscope. This, phenolic to be sure, but softer and talcy. All Meyer lemon and nashi pear. Cinnamon stick and pistachio, too. This wisps across the tongue, while the fiano etches the cheeks and creates a fully immersive effect. I love both. Similarly salty, intense and long. Easier drinking, perhaps. But not quite the same degree of intrigue or mouth-pummelling intensity. This said, wine is all in the moment and this should have plenty at your table. Ned Goodwin MW Published 03 August 2022

Fiano 2023 \ Casa

‘New Release’

A fresh white that exhibits notes of white peach, ripe pear, citrus fruits and hints of kaffir lime. Balanced with fresh acidity and subtle mid-palate texture. A complex, food friendly wine.

James Halliday \ Wine Companion 95 points: I enjoy tasting this family’s wines. Each year, an incremental ascendancy of quality and integrity: hand picked, partially wild fermented on skins for 10 days to impart flavour and textural moxie, a bit of barrel, blending and time on lees with some stirring. This brims with pear, wild fennel, raw almond and citrus verbena. The finish, salty and firm, the phenolics directing the intense wave of flavour. As prescient as it is fine drinking. Ned Goodwin MW Published 24 May 2022

Rosato | Rose 2023 \ Casa

‘New Release’

A drier, complex style which shows off the varietal (Sangiovese) charm with plenty of cherry fruits, raspberries and wild strawberries with a mix of cinnamon, white peppered and peeled tomato skins.

James Halliday \ Wine Companion 92 points: 2021 Rosato Seldom is rosé made to this assiduous degree of detail in Australia. Hand harvested and wild fermented, partially in barrel, with some pressings blended back in for textural mettle. Nothing anodyne about this. Proudly individual. An onion-skinned coral. The intensity of maraschino cherry, dried rose, spiced plum and sassafras, running high. A smattering of garden herb scraping across the long finish. A food wine. A proudly versatile iteration of the Australian-Italian sensibility, rather than the vapid contemporary norm. Bravo! Ned Goodwin MW Published 03 August 22

Sangiovese 2021 \ Casa \

Vigna Bottin are the second growers to plant sangiovese in the McLaren Vale region. It is one of northern Italy’s most noble varieties and hails from central Italy, most famously Chianti, Tuscany’s iconic wine. Led by flavours of sour cherry, red currants and wild, exotic forest fruits. An exciting wine showing meaty herbs, ironstone and inky dark fruits through mid-palate.

James Halliday \ Wine Companion 93 points: One of a score or so of addresses in the Vale whose wines I look forward to tasting each year, a thrill to witness their stylistic evolution as much as an ascension of finesse and fidelity to place – a joyous interpretation of all things Italianate. Fine sangio. Sour pithy cherry, a drape of dried thyme, rosemary and a whiff of brisket, brine and bracken. A mid-weighted and incredibly versatile expression with a fine bone of tannic persuasion drawing me back. Compare's Shiraz 2020 \ Casa

Matured in old oak barrels, displaying intense aromas and flavours of Amarillo cherry and cut herbs. Punchy in fruit character but balanced with vibrant acidity and strong, ripe tannins.

James Halliday \ Wine Companion 92 points: The Italianate expressions here are among the most exciting iterations in the land. This is the doorman, rather than the star act. Rich and plush, maintaining its integrity by virtue of wild fermentation, nine months in quality used French oak and a smidgeon of the real sheriff in town, grenache (10%). A sheath of finely meshed tannins, grape and oak. The finish, bolshy and effusive of sweet blue-fruit allusions dusted with spice, as is typical of the region. Yet there is nothing excessively brittle or shrill about it. A very well-made, honest wine. (Special value for money within the context of their rating) Ned Goodwin MW Published 02 August 23

Nero d’Avola 2021 \ Cantina

*Limit 1 per person. Pep’s Members limit 2 per person

Complex, brooding and dry wine with velvety lining running through your palate when tasting. Long, juicy and controlled with just the right balance of fruit sweetness, tannin grip and elevated acidity.

James Halliday \ Wine Companion 92 points: While nero performs well in the Vale, it services round, full-weighted and dusty wines brimming with primary fruit sweetness and inherent simplicity, embraced by the whole-bunch brigade as a result. Fun, I suppose, but when made with a more serious air it lacks the genetic pedigree of other Italian varieties including montepulciano, this address’ best red by a country mile. A saturated palate of red fruits, bergamot, juniper, thyme and red licorice, all lingering by force of sheer flavour over textural intrigue. Ned Goodwin MW Published 02 August 23

Barbera 2021 \ Cantina

*Limit 2 per person. Pep’s Members limit 3 per person

Generous spices, cranberries, dark cherries, liquorice and tobacco drive this wine. A sleek texture palate with prominent fine grain tannin bringing intensity and finesse.

James Halliday \ Wine Companion 93 points: As good as domestic barbera gets. And very good, that is. Organic principles that prize the integrity of vineyard and fruit, and the attention to detail that results, are all a winning combo. Bright, sappy and crunchy, almost belying its heavier weight. Red licorice, pulpy blue and dark-fruit allusions, aniseed, dried thyme, tobacco and a clip of French cedar oak vie for ascendancy with barbera’s inherent florals and electric acidity. Lovely drinking for the here and now. Ned Goodwin MW Published 02 August 23

Montepulciano 2022 \ Cantina

*Limit 1 per person. Pep’s Members limit 2 per person

Showcasing a deep inky purple colour with a firm structure, high acidity and soft tannins. This varietal is well suited to McLaren Vale boasting juicy characteristics of plum and boysenberry, balanced with an array of dried herbs and chocolate.

We dedicate this to our fathers, Selmo and Pep, and honour them by including their photo on the back of every bottle.

James Halliday \ Wine Comapanion 95 points: A very good inaugural release. The authenticity of montepulciano’s ferrous tannic gravel, dried tobacco, mineral pungency and robust black fruits flow long across a plane of perceivable oak and smoked meat bouillon. The tannins, ripples of sinew from attack to gritty finish, are particularly impressive, serving to placate any excessive fruit sweetness while marking this muscular wine with an Italianate aura of noble bitterness.
