Barbera 2021 \ Cantina

Generous spices, cranberries, dark cherries, liquorice and tobacco drive this wine. A sleek texture palate with prominent fine grain tannin bringing intensity and finesse.

James Halliday \ Wine Companion 93 points, Vintage 2021: Small open ferments with 15% whole bunch and native yeasts, plunged daily. As is typical of barbera, this is suspended on an electric rail of peppy acidity, taming the richer notes. A year in older French oak has further softened those edges, but unlike so often in Italy, it thankfully isn’t swamped with oak tannin. Berries both black and red, blueberry Danish, spiced plum, tar, bitumen and tobacco play across a wine that would tick just above mid-weight but for the whipcrack of acidity and dusty light seasoning of tannin that give it agreeable compression.
